If the thought of free-motion quilting a large quilt top sounds overwhelming, then let me show you how to quilt as you go. The best part of this technique is that when the sewing is done, so is the quilt! First measure your quilt block and cut out backing fabric the sames size. Then cut a piece of batting that is a 1/4" smaller all around. Layer them together into a quilt sandwich Next, quilt the block using a walking foot or a free-motion quilting foot be sure to leave a 1/4" unquilted around the block Quilt each of the blocks in your quilt this way. Next, put two blocks right side together and carefully sew just the top pieces. Use pins to keep backing fabric and batting out of the way Once you get the two blocks joined on the top layer, press your seam. Then smooth the backing fabric over the back of the seam, folding over one edge and pinning. Hand or machine stitch the seam, being careful to not leave any gaps. Once your blocks are all joined as rows, assemble the rows togethers the same way. Once that's all finished, simply bind your quilt and enjoy! And that's how you manage quilting a large quilt by quilting as you go.
