Created in 1869 through a generous initiative of the Salviati family, the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital is now a comprehensive children's polyclinic dedicated to healthcare and scientific research. The Hospital is a reference point in Italy and abroad and it is connected to the most important pediatric centers in Europe and the United States. In 1985, it has been nationally and internationally recognized by the Italian Ministry of Health as a Scientific Institute of hospitalization and healthcare with an adequate supply of resources, personnel and means. Health Care and Scientific Research The Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital combines a high specialized medical healthcare with an intensive scientific research. There are about 2,600 doctors, researchers, nurses, technicians and volunteers to promote the continuous progress in diagnosis and therapy, in order to achieve ever higher levels of compassionate healthcare. This is done also through programs of healthcare and education in third countries. In 2006 the Hospital was accredited by the Joint Commission International, a worldwide known institute that certifies the excellence in hospitality and quality of healthcare. The Hospital hosts the Italian headquarters of Orphanet, the world's largest database for rare diseases which are part of 38 countries. Four healthcare poles With its four poles in Rome Gianicolo, Rome San Paolo, Palidoro and Santa Marinella, the Bambino Gesù Children's Hospital has a total extension of 50 hectares. The Hospital has approximately 607 beds and records 27,000 admissions per year. In particular, it handles annually 83.000 days of day-hospital observation, 352.00 accesses each year, for a total of more than 1,100,000 health performances and 25,000 surgeries, while the Emergency Department and Acceptance registers more than 71,000 annual visits. We must also report the intense activity of transplants: the Bambino Gesù Children Hospital is in fact the only European hospital that satisfies all pediatric transplant needs. Three innovative initiatives have been carried out in Sicily with the Mediterranean Pediatric Cardiology Center - a unique Italian highly specialized healthcare pole - and in Calabria and Basilicata through the creation of regional centers, activated with the aim of reducing the medical 'migration', limiting it only to the complex cases, in order to enhance resources, facilities and expertise in these two regions. All medical specialties A complete assistance which provides to all medical specialties, from cardiosurgery, to transplant, from neuroscience, to plastic surgery, from endocrinology to genetics, from neonatal intensive care to nephrology. Furthermore, the Bambino Gesù Hospital match clinical activities and research with education training and professional updating for Italian and foreigner medical doctor, practical nurse, technician. The Hospital and its international commitment The Hospital performs, with the international commitment, the natural declination of its mission: bringing assistance and medical knowledge in the areas of the world where healthcare needs are required more. Over the years, more than forty countries have been involved in projects of assistance and intervention within the program "A hospital as big as five continents" which includes medical training and teaching, with periods of training in Italy. From Haiti to Tanzania, from Latin America to Southeast Asia and the African continent. Highly relevant are the activities carried out in Cambodia with the creation, in 2006, of a clinical center in Takeo and in Vietnam with the launch of a project of Pediatric Urology.
