Philips' Earth Day Promo 2-Pack of LED Bulbs for $5 is a great deal, or is it? Philips teamed up with Home Depot for Earth Day 2015 and is running a promo until July for two of their new, plain-jane 60 watt-equivalent LED light bulbs for just $4.97 - no utility rebate required. The bulbs are available in both warm white (2700K) and daylight white (5000K) to fit your needs. The deal seems great on face value, probably the lowest-price LED bulbs from a major manufacturer in history, but is it really a great deal? These bulbs have a few drawbacks, including: a short 3-year warranty, only a 10-year predicted lifespan, no dimming ability, only 80 CRI (out of 100 - light quality), the heat sink gets quite hot and the bulbs do buzz a little bit when on. There is no information yet as to whether they will hold up in a fully-enclosed fixture. But otherwise, these new cheap LED bulbs from Philips put out 800 lumens of flicker-free light and are very bright. The bulb size is smaller than most standard 60-watt replacement LED bulbs and the bulb itself is very light in weight as it is almost entirely plastic. Should you buy it? Maybe, but just know that you're getting a super-cheap bulb that Philips probably considers disposable at this price. If you don't need dimming, super-high light quality or a 25-year lifespan, then these bulbs are probably for you. Time will tell how they actually hold up in real life. These 2-pack bulbs are only stocked at Home Depot retail stores right now, and are back-ordered or sold-out on the Home Depot website as of May 2, 2015.
